Ariadne’s Journey

Young Ariadne leaves city life behind and soon discovers an imaginary world, made up of images both familiar and strange, a place where mythology, archaeological findings and a dreamlike universe entange within a colourful puzzle of fantasy and curiosity. Ancient ruins begin transforming, frescoes are animated and an awe-inspiring being awaits its revelation.

Ariadne’s Journey is a projection mapping production inspired by the world of Knossos. It was conceptualized, designed and developed within the Institute of Informatics & Telecommunications of NCSR “Demokritos”. The project combines projection mapping technology, a physical set, animated footage and original music composition.

Ariadne’s Journey was an opportunity for the creative team to explore the narrative dimensions of video mapping by replacing flat screen projection with a three-dimensional set, thus exploiting perspective distortion and spatial illusion.
It is a work that promotes discussions around cultural heritage, history, arts and computation and promotes innovative ways of representation and narrative exploration, during a time when digital media propose a new paradigm in how history and archeology should “recreate the myth” and present it to new audiences.

Ariadne’s Journey was presented at the Athens Science Festival and the National Center for Physical Research “Demokritos” in May 2018.
